The real estate market in St. Charles escaped relatively unscathed by the national housing market crisis that began in 2008. During the past decade, home prices in St. Charles have held steady, neither bubbling as so many residential real estate markets did nationally, nor did the St. Charles home values precipitously drop as in other areas of the county. The average listing price of houses for sale in St. Charles is $222,480 in September 2011. The median sales price for the second quarter of 2011 from homes in St. Charles was $132,216 representing no significant change from the same period the preceding year. Distressed properties represent less than 20 percent of the housing inventory in St. Charles. This provides opportunities for residential real estate investors with opportunities, without any apparent negative impact on home values.

Frenchtown and the St. Charles Historic District are both neighborhoods listed on the National Historic Register, which feature homes dating from the early 19th century. The homes in built from 1820-1850 typically French Colonial, German Single Houses, and Federal style homes. Many homes from this period feature a large front porch with two set of front doors and are constructed from brick. Homes built from 1850 to 1900 are predominantly Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Victorian. Frontier Park, a riverfront green space and recreational area located along the Missouri River, serves are the boundaries of these neighborhoods. New Town at St. Charles is a 60 acre mixed use environmentally sensitive community that was first conceptualized in 2003. The development consists of single-family residential homes, apartments, school, recreational facilities, and businesses set among expanses of green space, fountains, canals, and lakes. Residents of all ages can participate in recreational activities and enjoy the arts that are sponsored in the community.
